(No) Escape

"The Bone Season"
by Samantha Shannon,  is a brilliant read. I said I thought it was two chapters, but it is two books, the main one followed by the prequel "The Pale Dreamer". Paige has been kidnapped and sent to Oxford and is effectively a prisoner. She gets a chance to go back to London and tries to escape in a fight but she ends up back in Oxford. The book is excellent.

I recently discovered that my American Amazon Author page has a feed from this blog which you can see here. It only shows on the .com site but not on others. C'est La Vie.

The music is "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" by Rupert Holmes. Great main riff, dire lyrics.

Fighting For Strangers

"The Bone Season" by Samantha Shannon,  is a brilliant read. I said I thought it was two chapters, but it is two books, the main one followed by the prequel "The Pale Dreamer". The book is drawing me further and further into its universe and currently, we are at a psychic and physical battle that Paige (The Pale Dreamer) is involved in at Trafalgar Square. She is on the wrong side fighting against those that she wants to be reunited with.

Over The Hill Of Bones

"The Bone Season" by Samantha Shannon,  is a brilliant read. I said I thought it was two chapters, but it is two books, the main one followed by the prequel "The Pale Dreamer". It gets more engrossing as you go through, in a sort of dystopian Dickensian fashion. I am still wrestling with the concepts but that is part of the joy of this ride.

Bad To The Bone Season

"The Bone Season" by Samantha Shannon,  is a brilliant read. I said I thought it was two chapters, but it is two books, the main one followed by the prequel "The Pale Dreamer". I have just picked this up again after being on holiday and the further I get into it the more I know that I will be getting the whole series in my library. It is very violent but I have documented that in previous posts, but I keep reading one more page because I want to know what is going to happen.

Pale Dream Is Over

"The Bone Season" by Samantha Shannon,  is a brilliant read. I said I thought it was two chapters, but it is two books, the main one followed by the prequel "The Pale Dreamer". I am a hundred fifty pages into The Bone Season, and have finished The Pale Dreamer which is just eighty pages of which five are the epilogue and fifteen are a glossary, but is still a great read and a great start to the series which I will be reading.

A Pale Dreamer

"The Bone Season" by Samantha Shannon,  is a brilliant read. I said I thought it was two chapters, but it is two books, the main one followed by the prequel "The Pale Dreamer". I am a hundred pages into The Bone Season, but then thought I should really read the prequel first so unusually I have two bookmarks in one book to remember where I was in the main book.

The Bones Are Showing

"The Bone Season" by Samantha Shannon,  is a brilliant read but a big book, It is a near future dystopia with elements of Mervyn Peake's "Gormenghast", Philip Pulman's "His Dark Materials" and "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins. While it is easy to read it is not an easy read and cyberpunk elements are reminding me of the work of Willam Gibson.

Dem Bones

I got it wrong that  "The Bone Season" by Samantha Shannon,  has only two chapters. It's the book and it's prequel although the prequel ("The Pale Dreamer") is after the book. It does have chapters and white space and, so far it is an excellent read.

It's Bone Season

I ditched"The Complete John Silence Stories" by Algernon Blackwood it was getting like pulling teeth. Dry as hell and the third story was like a badly stitched quilt.

Next up is "The Bone Season" by Samantha Shannon, which has 550 pages and is not what I expected from the title. It's a near-futuristic dystopia and has only two chapters, the first of which is 450 pages so that scares me, but twenty pages in it has me hooked.

Silently Silent

I am now finding "The Complete John Silence Stories" by Algernon Blackwood a chore. I complained that there was no white space but there is a little between chapter two and threee. I will stick with it but it is definitely a reading slog, almost like a Thomas Hardy novel or the like. The concepts are good but delivered in a terribly boring way.

More Silence

While I am enjoying  "The Complete John Silence Stories" by Algernon Blackwood I have one slight quibble, there is no white space. I like chapters and sections to be well defined but this goes on without the tiniest delimitation. I will stick with it but it is a bit of a reading slog, almost like a Thomas Hardy novel or the like.

Silence In The Blackwood

"The Complete John Silence Stories" by Algernon Blackwood is two hundred fifty pages of closely typed Victorian Supernatural tales, and it reminds me of "Carnacki: The Ghost Finder" by William Hope Hodgson. You can read more about him here. This will take me a lot longer than my last book but I am finding rather good.

Victorian Blackwood Silence

The Collected Works of Billy the Kid by the Canadian Michael Ondaatje. Part diary part poetry drawing on contemporary accounts, period photographs, dime novels, and his own prodigious fund of empathy and imagination, only a hundred pages but like nothing I have read before. That is complete now and is brilliant but at times horrific, the prose morphing into poetry and back. I will probably revisit it though it is not a happy book, but is very intense.

Next up is "The Complete John Silence Stories" by Algernon Blackwood, two hundred and fifty pages of Victorian Supernatural tales just to take me off in a different direction.

The Collected Works Of Billy The Kid

"Creation Stories" by Alan McGee (that's the record label, not religion or history) is finished. It's still Oasis being the biggest band in the world (I think they are an adequate pub band) The Libertines were a band who's only button was self-destruct, but then McGee found Glasvegas.

My next book is The Collected Works of Billy the Kid by the Canadian Michael Ondaatje. Part diary part poetry drawing on contemporary accounts, period photographs, dime novels, and his own prodigious fund of empathy and imagination, only a hundred pages but like nothing I have read before. This will be finished on my next post I think. The nearest I can compare it to is "taRaNtula" by Bob Dylan though it is nothing like it.

Creation Poptones Super Furry Animals And Libertines

"Creation Stories" by Alan McGee (that's the record label, not religion or history) is coming to the end. It's still Oasis being the biggest band in the world (I think they are an adequate pub band)m Creation has gone and Poptones with The Libertines is where I am up to.

I was unaware that the Super Furry Animals were on Creation, and I do love them so I will feature one of their songs as they really might be the best band in the world. A damned sight better than Oasis.
